Manage sessions

Find, search, pin, rename, and archive your chats and agent runs; resume, fork, rewind, and export them; and set each session's mode.

A session is a saved chat or agent run in Multilo. Multilo keeps your sessions, so you can come back to one later, search what was said, try a different direction without losing the first one, or rewind to before something went wrong.

Keep Multilo up to date

Several features on this page arrived in October 2026. If you don’t see one, update Multilo.

Find your sessions

Your sessions are listed in the right sidebar, under Sessions. Tabs at the top filter the list: All, Chats, Agents, and Running.

  • Search: press Ctrl+K (⌘+K on a Mac). Search matches what was said in your chats, not only their titles, and each result shows the matching line.
  • Sort by Last active, Date created, Title (A–Z), or Most messages.

Pin, rename, archive, and delete

Open a session’s menu with the ⋯ button, or right-click it:

ActionWhat it does
PinKeeps a session you use often easy to find.
RenameGives it a name you’ll recognize, such as “Methods rewrite”.
ArchiveMoves it out of the way, into a separate archived view. You can restore it later. Archived agent sessions are deleted 30 days after you archive them.
DeleteRemoves the session from your list.
ExportSaves the conversation as a file. See Export a session.

Name the sessions you’ll come back to. It matters most when you work on several parts of a paper at once.

Resume a session

Click a session in the list to reopen it. It comes back with its whole conversation and opens where you left off; a Scroll to bottom button appears if you have scrolled up. A session you restore from the archive comes back complete too.

A reopened session keeps:

  • the full conversation, including your first request;
  • its attachments;
  • its own permission mode.

Your project files, library, and instructions and memories live in the project, not in the session, so they are always current when you return.

Continue an interrupted run

If Multilo closes while an agent is working, the chat shows “This run was interrupted when Multilo closed.” with a Continue button. Click it to pick up where the run stopped.

To have this happen on its own, turn on Continue interrupted runs after a restart in Settings. Multilo then resumes the run automatically if it restarts within an hour.

Find text in a chat

Press Ctrl+F in a conversation to search it. Matches update while a reply is still streaming, and the search also reaches older steps that aren’t loaded on screen yet.

Fork a session

Forking makes a copy of a conversation so you can try a different direction without losing the one you were on. The original stays exactly as it was.

  • From a message: choose Fork from here on any message. A new chat continues from that point.
  • The whole chat: type /fork to copy the entire conversation into a new chat.

For example, fork before asking for a bold restructure of your Discussion. If you prefer the original direction, go back to the first session.

Edit, re-run, and rewind

Every message you sent has these actions:

ActionWhat it does
Copy this messageCopies your message.
Edit and resendPuts the message back in the chat box to change. Sending it replaces everything after that message.
Run this message againAsks again with the same message.
Delete this message and everything after itCuts the conversation back to before the message.

On a message that led the AI to change files, you also get Rewind to before this message, with three choices:

  1. Files and conversation

Restores the files and removes this message and everything after it.
  2. Conversation only

Removes the messages and leaves your files as they are.
  3. Files only

Restores the files and keeps the conversation.

When you rewind the conversation, your message returns to the chat box so you can change it or send it again. Every file restore keeps the text it replaced, so a rewind can itself be undone from version history.

What a rewind can't undo

A rewind restores files in your project. It doesn’t reverse terminal commands or changes made in outside services — those have already happened.

Review what a session changed

A bar above the chat box shows how many files the conversation changed, with Keep all and Undo all. Expand it to see each changed file, with new and deleted files marked. For each file you can keep or undo all its changes, open it, or show its changes — and inside a file, keep or undo a single change.

  • If you typed in a file after the AI changed it, undoing the AI’s change leaves your typing alone.
  • An undo can itself be undone.
  • If a change has moved since the AI made it, Multilo tells you it wasn’t undone instead of guessing.

Use the review bar to decide what to keep, and rewind to go back in time.

Set each session’s mode

Each chat keeps its own permission mode, so a careful session and a fast one can sit side by side:

ModeWhat it means
ApproveYou approve the agent’s actions as it goes.
AutopilotRoutine work runs straight through. Shell commands, installs, deletions, protected files, and anything outside the project still ask first.
Bypass permissionsThe agent doesn’t stop to ask for permission. Use it only for work you fully trust.

Settings → AI Agent → Permission mode sets the mode new chats start in. New installs start in Autopilot.

Plan mode

For big changes, ask for a plan before anything changes. Turn plan mode on with Shift+Tab in the chat box, by typing /plan, or from Mode → Plan in the chat settings menu. A Plan mode chip shows it’s on.

  • Nothing is edited until you approve. Plan mode stays on, and you can ask for changes — “drop step 3, keep the Methods” — and the plan is revised.
  • Click Edit on the plan card to change it yourself; where your version differs, yours wins. Then click Approve & run.
  • While it works, the agent’s task list appears above the chat box as Tasks, with a count such as “1/3 done”.

Manage context within a session

  • Scope the chat. Use the scope chip at the top of a chat to limit it to your library, a folder, a notes file, or a single document — or right-click a folder and choose Talk to this folder. A scoped chat answers only from those files, quotes the passages it used, and says so when the files don’t cover the question. You can change the scope between turns.
  • Start a new chat for a new task. A new chat starts with a fresh context window; your project, library, and instructions are still there.
  • Stop a run with the Stop button or Esc. A task otherwise runs until it finishes.
  • Cap long runs with a per-task token budget in Settings. It’s off unless you set one.
  • Change settings mid-chat — such as web access — and they apply from your next message.

Long sessions are compacted automatically. See how AI models work.

Export a session

Type /export, click Export conversation, or choose Export from a chat’s menu in the list. Then choose Copy to clipboard or Save to file. The export is a Markdown file with every message and the full output of each step — handy for keeping a record of how a draft was made, or for sharing with a supervisor.
