Settings
Every section of Multilo's Settings explained — language, appearance, editor, library indexing, voice, notifications, privacy, your own API keys, agents, instructions, memory, and skills.
Settings is where you set up Multilo the way you like it: the language and look of the app, how the editor behaves, how your library is indexed, how much agents can do on their own, and what the AI should always remember. This page walks through every section.
Open Settings
Open the account menu
Click your account row at the bottom of the right-hand bar.Choose Settings
Click Settings. The sections are listed on the left in two groups: App and AI.
Some places open the right section for you. For example, Manage models… in the model picker opens Models.
Find a setting
Type in Search settings at the top. It searches every section at once — titles, headings, and the settings themselves — and dims the sections with no match. Use the up and down arrow keys to move between the sections that match.
App settings
General
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Display name | The name Multilo shows for you |
| Language | The app’s language: English (US), English (UK), Chinese, Hindi, German, Arabic (beta), Korean, French, Spanish, Portuguese (Brazil), Indonesian, Turkish, or Russian. Restart Multilo to apply it everywhere. |
| Appearance | System (follows your computer), Light, or Dark |
| Default project location | The folder where new projects are created |
| Reopen windows and Open projects in a new window | What opens when you start Multilo, and where projects open |
| Explorer confirmations | Whether the Files panel asks before you move files by dragging, delete them, or paste files copied from outside Multilo |
| Updates | Automatic (recommended), Only when I check, or Off |
| Use hardware acceleration | Uses your graphics card to draw the app. Turn it off if the window flickers or shows blank areas. Needs a restart. |
Editor
- Font Size, Tab Size, and Word Wrap (Off, On, or At Column).
- Markdown source editing — adds a button to the toolbar for editing a document as raw Markdown instead of the formatted rich view. See the editor.
- Auto Save — Off, After Delay, On Focus Change, or On Window Change. With After Delay, set the wait in Auto Save Delay (ms).
Library
- Default citation style — the style new documents use, APA unless you change it. See citations.
- Keep indexing in the background and Respect power settings when indexing — whether Multilo keeps reading new sources while you work, and whether it pauses while Low Power Mode or battery saver is on.
- Use the GPU for library indexing — Automatic, GPU, or CPU.
- PDF indexing limits — how many pages and characters of each PDF are read (100 pages and 500,000 characters to start with). Raise them for long books.
Voice
- Enable voice features — dictation and reading aloud.
- Voice and Dictation language — the voice used for reading aloud, and the language you speak in.
- Auto-read AI responses — reads each AI answer aloud. Off to start with.
See speech.
Notifications
Choose which events show a notification: Permission requests (an agent needs your OK), Questions (an agent asks you something), and Task complete. Notification sound turns the sound on or off. All are on to start with, which is useful when an agent runs while you work in another window.
Privacy
- Terms, privacy, and AI processing — click Review to read them again.
- Anonymous usage telemetry, Crash reports, Crash diagnostics, and Help improve Multilo — turn each kind of data sharing on or off.
- View what was sent and Delete my telemetry data — see or remove what has been shared.
- Clear extension permissions — makes every extension ask for permission again.
See data usage for what each kind of data contains.
AI settings
Models
Your API keys. Click Add API key to use your own account with Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, OpenRouter, xAI, Azure OpenAI, Amazon Bedrock, Google Vertex AI, or any OpenAI-compatible service. Keys are stored in your computer’s secure keychain, and chats that use them don’t use Multilo credits. You can also add a key for web search with Exa, Brave Search, or Tavily. See model configuration.
Agent
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Permission mode | The mode new chats start in: Approve, Autopilot, or Bypass permissions. See permission modes. |
| Permission rules | What agents may always do, must ask about, or may never do. See permissions. |
| Run commands in a sandbox | Keeps commands an agent runs walled off from the rest of your computer |
| Switch models when a message is flagged | Switch automatically or Ask each time when a model can’t take a request |
| Keep the computer awake | Stops your computer sleeping while an agent is working |
| Auto-compact | Summarises a long chat so it can keep going. Set when it starts with Auto-compact at (90% when left blank). See how models work. |
| Show agent detail | Shows an agent’s planning and notes on every step, not only its answer |
| Hooks | Checks that run automatically before or after an agent acts. See permissions. |
Instructions
Research voice & integrity — the rules the AI follows everywhere. Choose whether they apply to This project or All projects, then set:
- Author voice — how you write. Click Learn from my writing to build it from your own work.
- Research integrity — rules such as never inventing a citation.
- Output style — the format to aim for, such as a journal or a thesis. Start from a preset (nature, ieee, acm, thesis, grant, review, or plain) and add your own conventions.
These are saved as files in your project’s .multilo folder. Create starter files makes them for you. See store instructions and memories.
Memory
- Use memory — On or Off.
- Show — see what’s remembered for This project, All projects, or This session, and edit or delete it.
- Remember from chats — Save automatically or Off. Off to start with, so nothing is saved unless you ask.
- Export everything or Clear all in this scope.
Skills
Review and remove the skills installed for This project or All projects. To make a new one, type /createskill in chat. See skills.

How settings are saved
- Most settings apply straight away, in every open Multilo window.
- Use hardware acceleration needs a restart, and so does Language to reach every part of the app.
- Instructions, memory, and skills can be set for one project or for all of them.
- Some agent settings can be fixed by a project or your organisation. They show Set by… and can’t be changed here.
No reset button
There’s no button to put every setting back to its starting value. Change the ones you need by hand.Troubleshoot
| Problem | What to do |

| Library indexing slows my computer down | Turn on Respect power settings when indexing, or set Use the GPU for library indexing to CPU. |
